SERCEA - KAWEMPE REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL MEETING

Ethical Excellence in Clinical Research: SERCEA Project to Collaborate with Kawempe Regional Referral Hospital.

The Strengthening Ethics and Responsible Conduct of Clinical Trials in East and Sub-Saharan Africa (SERCEA) project continues to make significant strides in promoting ethical standards in clinical research across the region. As clinical trials expand, the need for robust ethical oversight becomes increasingly critical to ensure the integrity and transparency of these studies.

Today marked a notable milestone for the SERCEA project as the team led by Ms. Hellen Opolot, the project scientific lead met with the Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Byaruhanga and key members of Kawempe National Referral Hospital in Uganda. The primary objective of this meeting was to discuss the establishment of an accredited Research Ethics Committee (REC) at the hospital, a step crucial for enhancing the hospital’s capacity for ethical oversight of clinical research.

Building a Foundation of Ethical Excellence

During the meeting, the SERCEA team highlighted the importance of RECs in safeguarding the rights and well-being of research participants. By setting up an accredited REC, Kawempe National Referral Hospital will be better equipped to review and monitor clinical trials, ensuring that they comply with international ethical standards. This initiative aligns with SERCEA’s mission to reinforce ethical considerations and responsible conduct in clinical research across East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
